Robbert runs like a girl

Post by Wilbefast » Sun Apr 11, 2010 11:55 pm

Am I the only one seeing this?

Seriously though, I reckon the hips are twisted a bit... exaggeratedly - or is it just me :?

maybe Robbert is driven by placeholder animations.

wait no, that's silly and unreasonable.

Lol, this thread is great.

Frankly, he could walk much more flamboyantly. Also, if you're not satisfied (check), and you're hardcore (ehhhhh), you can make your own animations right now on the scripting level.

There is no such thing as "running as a girl/boy".
There is, actually. The anatomical differences near hip region are minor, but that alone does cause some differences. Those minor differences are sometimes exaggerated in real life, and again through animation.

Animating is about conveying things through how people move. There's running as a boy, as a man, as a teenager, as an old man; walking happy, sad, thoughtful, mad, suspicious, worried, with a friend. There's walking back after losing a big game:

What about a challenge? Animate a new walkcycle for Robbert, but make it so it's not Robbert who's walking.
http://www.seventhsanctum.com/generate. ... =quickchar

Go there, generate 5 (or more) characters, choose one, then post it here and start animating.

You can change what you get; combine from several, add or remove from it, but it's best to choose something with at most two special qualities, and drop everything that you won't be trying to convey. Examples:
The withdrawn Wizard who is burdened with dark knowlege. -> The withdrawn wizard
The clumsy, striking Fighter. -> the clumsy warrior
The adventurer hiding a dark secret. -> a man with a dark secret
The worldwise trader. -> a wordly, well-off man
The unhealthy, negative, brutal marine who is considered the worst in his/her profession. -> a sad soldier

So yeah, once I get home I'll probably try the "man with a dark secret". Hopefully I'll have something to show in a few days...

 There are... anatomical differences. Men tend to be a lot more rigid around the hips - hip size is actually used to determine the sex of skeletal remains. Men also move their arms straight forward when running, because they don't need to avoid their... anatomy.

I'm not just talking about the very ample though - Erickson actually showed that young girls, even "Tom Boys" who originally ran "like boys", would suddenly alter their gait around puberty. So it's not even a learned behaviour, it's something ingrained.

New evidence has come to light people. Take a look at this.

I think we all know what this means 8)

Wow, how could I have not seen that. It was so obvious too!

Gentlemen, I think that is it our duty as forum members to fully support Robbert in his decision. He should be free to love whomever he wants.

Sorry, but this got me thinking of a great song by Dimmu Borgir.
Here's a link: Dimmu Borgir - "Unorthodox Manifesto"

But to stick to the topic, he does run somewhat girly.

Just doing my part to make the world that little bit less politically correct :)

I want you to try something: get up and walk to the other side of the room putting each foot exactly in front of the last. As though you're tight-rope walking. Try it.

No, I'm not telling you where I'm going with this until you've tried :o

I can't really believe people are arguing this, animation isn't about reality its about perception.

Masculine/feminine, Happy/sad etc. can be fairly subtle in the real world, but for animation you're creating a character that has to be quickly interpreted by the mammalian brain.

Animation 101: simplify and exaggerate.

Exaggerate through flamboyance? What happened to the massive swinging shoulders? Now we're animating men with exaggerated hip movement?
